Sunglasses:
After completing the game two times, Snake and Raiden
will be wearing sunglasses.
Pliskin:
Successfully complete 50% of the VR missions as Snake.
Ninja Raiden:
Successfully complete 50% of the VR missions as Raiden
to unlock Ninja Raiden in the VR Missions.
European Extreme difficulty:
Successfully complete the game under the normal difficulty
setting.
Control title screen:
Press White to hear a gunshot and see a flash
at the title screen. Use the Right Analog-stick at the
title screen to change the background color.
Photograph mode:
Successfully complete bomb disposal mode, hold up mode
[alternative missions], and eliminate mode to unlock photograph
mode in the VR Missions.
Bonus items for dog tags:
Gather the following percentage of total dog tags
per chapter on any difficulty level to unlock the appropriate
bonus.
Tanker Chapter
Unlimited ammunition bandanna: 46 dog tags [30%]
Stealth apparatus: 76 dog tags [50%]
Plant Chapter
Unlimited ammunition wig: 73 dog tags [30%]

Metal Gear Solid 1 Snake:
Successfully complete 100% of the VR missions as Snake,
Pliskin, Tuxedo Snake, Raiden, Ninja Raiden, and Raiden X.
All VR missions and characters:
Start a new Missions file, then enter 'UUDDLRLRBA'
as a name.
In-game reset:
Hold L + R and hit Start + Select
during game play.
Hints: Tanker chapter: Alerted poster girls:
When you are in the room with all the lockers, open
one of them with a girl's picture on it. Go against the locker
door. Go nearly inside the locker and knock on the girls leg.
She will now have an exclamation point above her, and there will
be a clearing or an alert mode in play -- just quickly go into
the locker and crouch. You can knock on her leg about six times
in a row and the guards will be confused for awhile.
Hints: Get Hideo Kojima's dog tag:
Play the game on extreme mode. When you meet Snake
in Arsenal Gear Ascending Colon to get your things back, knock
him out. Unequip your weapon, drag him, and he will drop Hideo
Kojima's dog tag.
Hints: VR Missions: Defeating Genola:
When you play the VR Missions as Metal Gear Solid
1 Snake, you will have to fight Genola. To defeat him, simply
aim the Stinger Missile Launcher up and look for a lock-on square.
Lock on to it and shoot a missile. When it hits, Mech Genola will
appear and defeat Genloa.
Hints: VR Missions: Hidden Metal Gear and
Hints: Exploding poster:
When walking through the engine room, you will eventually
find yourself underneath a Russian guard that is standing on a
ledge hanging above you. If you watch his pattern, you will notice
that he is using binoculars to look at the wall. Look around the
wall behind you. You will notice that he is looking at another
one of the pictures of the Japanese girls. While he is looking
at it, shoot it with one of your weapons [preferably the silenced
USP if available]. When you shoot it, it explodes. Note: Doing
this sends you into alert mode; be prepared for the backups.
Hints: Quick Elimination missions:
When in Elimination missions for Snake, Raiden, or
anyone with a gun, sneak up behind the enemy and hold. Your character
will yell 'Freeze'. Click the Left Analog-stick
to enter person view. Aim for his head to take him out. This will
save bullets. If you aim for the head with a M9 to knock out a
enemy, quickly shoot the head and he will fall asleep. It will
count as killing him.
Hints: Avoiding detection:
When a patrolling guard sees you, run into a room where
the screen goes black and tells you where you are. The game will
not go into alert mode, evasion mode, or caution mode.
If you have an a silenced USP/SOCOM, you can shoot at pipes. They
are quite common in the game, and, when hit, shoot out steam.
This will paralyze or distract an enemy, depending on their proximity
to the pipe. Fire extinguishers have the same effect. With a silenced
weapon, you can shoot a wall near a guard to make them turn and
look at the wall for a few seconds. If you evade a guard's detection
in hanging mode and they walk past, hit Action. Your
character will flip over the railing and knock the guard out with
the impact. Alternately, you can fall on a guard from hanging
mode. If you are out of ammo, unequip your weapon, run at a guard,
and when close, hit Crouch. Your character will either
do a somersault or a cartwheel and the impact will knock the guard
out. if all else fails, toss a chaff grenade, run and pop off
all the guards before the radios work again.
Hints: Masked Snake:
When Emma is crossing the oil fence, look with your
PSG-1 sniper rifle. Snake will have a green mask on his face.
Hints: Plant chapter: Boxes:
In the strut where the boxes are located, you can put
on a box and go to the bottom. Once there, you climb on the box
delivery port and wait for the conveyer belt to stop. Depending
on what box you have on, the belt will take you to where those
boxes are supposed to go. For example, the orange boxes will take
to the cafeteria.
Hints: Hostage comments:
In B1 of the Shell 1 core, where all the hostages are
found, you can get a good laugh by pointing the directional mic.
at every hostage except for Ames and hiting Action. Some
will be scared, some will get angry, others will simply turn their
head away, and some may have something interesting to say. You
will eventually find Jennifer, the secret service agent Snake
rescued in the 'A Wrongdoing' Snake Tale. It is recommend
that you have stealth equipped while tying this, as the more racket
you cause the more guards will be called in to patrol the area.
taken away by Gurlugon:
On Raiden's seventh variety mission in VR mode, when
you fight Gurlugon, equip the enemy uniform and the AK and let
Gurlugon attack you. He will stop the attack and fall in love
with you. He picks you up and leaves with Raiden, and Raiden tries
to get free. Note: This counts as a mission failure, but is funny
to watch.
Hints: Snake Tales [External Gazer]: Gurlugon
Hints: Coolant defense:
When you are bombarded by guards, do not immediately
shoot them. Take out the Coolant spray that Stillman gave you
at the start of the game. Spray the Coolant at them and they will
protect their faces. While they are doing that. Use the opportunity
to shoot the guards and run.
Hints: Plant chapter: Thermal Goggles:
When you are at the beginning with Raiden [and he is
wearing scuba gear], dive into the water. The Thermal Goggles
will be almost at the bottom, in the right corner. You will see
a package in the water if you look carefully.
Hints: Snake Tales: Skip text faster:
Whenever you play a Snake Tale, there will be text
instead of intermission sequences. When this happens, you can
skip the text faster by holding Y. When the pages reach
the end, hit A to end the text sequence.
Hints: Single punch knockout:
To knock out an enemy with a single punch, sneak up
behind them. You can also hold them up if desired. Get as close
as you can without touching them, then click the Left Analog-stick
to enter first person view. Then, hit A to crouch [not
prone], aim for their groin, and punch. They will go down in one
hit. This technique is useful because it does not make as much
sound as a three or four hit combo.
Hints: Tanker chapter: Angry characters:
Take three pictures of women, three pictures of the
Marine Commandant, three pictures of Ocelot [in Hold 3; he is
only found if you crawled under the ground], and a picture of
two lockers just before Simtex Defusal. Otacon will have some
funny responses.
Look at Olga and call Otacon.
Keep hiting the remote about twelve times in Hold 2.
When you pass Simtex and hear 'Virazano bridge check point
passed', run until you see a guard and hit against the
right wall. When the guard stops, peek through the corner. The
pipe will fall and the guard will not notice you. If you keep
still, look at the radar to see a second guard coming. He will
save you.
Hints: Tanker chapter: Vulcan Raven action
Hints: Bird droppings:
Complete the Tanker chapter with Snake. After that,
get to the roof with Raiden. You will see a group of birds. Shoot
one with the M9. The rest of the birds will fly around. If you
see one go directly above your head, it should send some droppings
on you. You have to be in first person view. The bird droppings
will also come off the screen when you go back to third person
view.
Hints: Easier Pull-ups:
Instead of doing half an hour of pull-ups, go to a
place with two rails at the top and bottom, evenly lined up. Then,
do the hang-drop-catch ten or twenty times to get a fast level
2 and 3 grip.
Hints: Choking enemies:
A silent and reliable method for knocking out an enemy
is to choke them until they lose consciousness. However, this
technique has an extremely high chance of 'accidental death'
due to the enemy's neck breaking. It takes eleven chokes including
the initial grab to eliminate the enemy. Therefore, choking the
enemy nine to ten times will result in the enemy being 'knocked
out'.
shorts:
You can make the Marines in the Tanker chapter appear
in their underwear in the room where Metal Gear is being held.
Press White two or three times when start at the title
screen then select the normal difficulty setting. When you get
to where you have to take pictures of Metal Gear, the nearby marines
will not be wearing their pants.
Hints: Plant chapter: Bird talk:
Go to B2 of the Shell 1 Core. Eliminate all guards
and find the caged parrot. You can teach it to say 'You must
be Ames' by pointing the Directional Mic at it and hiting
Action several times. Firing different weapons at the bird
will also cause it to say new things. For example, Coolant Spray
will cause the bird to say 'This sucks'.
When you are in the computer room on B1 of the Shell 1 Core with
guards in it, if you shoot the bird, he will say 'Enemy spotted,
send reinforcements' and the game will enter Alert mode.
Hints: Plant chapter: Shaver:
You can get the shaver in the Plant chapter only under
the extreme difficulty setting. You will give it to Snake later,
who will shave his beard near the end of the game.
Hints: Fire extinguishers:
If you shoot a fire extinguisher and are too close,
your character will cough and your health will decrease.
Hints: Knock out guard with cigarette:
Have Snake or Raiden put a cigarette in his mouth.
Then, hold up an enemy and move as close as possible to him. He
will start to cough. After he coughs about four or five times,
he will fall and become stunned.
Hints: Tanker chapter: Thermal Goggles:
After defeating Olga, walk up the stairs. You will
see a ladder. Climb it and go all the way to find the Thermal
Goggles.
Hints: Tanker chapter: Easter Island head:
When you are in the room with Emma's parrot, crawl
around underneath the computers and electronics. You can find
a small statue of a Easter Island head.
Hints: Defeating Solidus:
In the final battle with Solidus, before he sheds the
tentacles from his suit, you can run off the side of the building
and hang on the ledge. Solidus will come over and say 'What
are you doing?' and go for an overhead double sword strike.
When he does this, hit the button to climb back up and Solidus's
attack will go through you, giving you a free shot at him. This
can also be done to avoid his homing missiles, but you have to
climb back up at just the right time to avoid all four.
Hints: Snake falls down stairs:
Use the following trick to make Solid Snake fall on
the stairs. Do a barrel roll by running and hiting A
near some steps. Make sure you land on the steps. Snake will fall
and become unconscious momentarily.
Hints: Wake up a guard in sneaking mode:
While Ninja Raiden is in sneaking mode, walk up to
a unconscious guard and click Left Analog-stick to enter
first person view. Click and hold Right Analog-stick to
send a thrust [stab] into the enemy's head. This will wake him
up. Kill the guard and hide his body so the other soldiers will
not find it.
While Raiden is in sneaking mode, walk up to a unconscious guard
and click Left Analog-stick to enter first person view.
Aim at the enemy's head, then keep punching him. This will wake
him up. Kill the guard or he will call for back up. Hide his body
so the other soldiers will not find it.
Hints: Deactivating C4 bombs:
When deactivating the 'Baby C4 bombs', the
last one for the very easy and easy difficulty settings is under
the submarine hanging from the ceiling in the bottom of Strut
A Shell 1, where you started out as Raiden. The one on the hard
difficulty settings always move around the room, usually in the
caged area under the stairs or behind the computer controls.
Hints: Plant chapter: Angry characters:
When you are covering E.E. with the sniper rifle, shoot
a lot of birds. They will contact you on the CODEC. The next time
you try to save, Rose will get mad at you.
After you get the Coolant do not waste any time and go directly
to CD connecting bridge. You will see Snake in a box and a guard
who is knocked out. Take out your gun and shoot him as many times
as possible. Then, get a box in strut E, equip it, and call Snake.
He will then talk about loving your box.
Select a ration and call Snake. Jack/Raiden will tell snake a
secret about Rose.
Go to hostage room in Shell 1 Core and find Jennifer. Note: She
does not have a gag. Use your directional microphone two times
to ask her. The second time she answers 'Stop don't touch
me!', because she was violated by guards.
Tranquilize Jennifer her and crawl under a table. Take out your
camera, take a picture of her crotch, and save it. Call the Colonel
and they will protest.
